Christmas Festivities

Tonight we had a lovely party . I want to send out a very sincere THANKS to the program committee who organized the evening,and to the wonderful people that took time to donate a door prize or organize a game. Also thanks to the weather for fair winds and no snow.

There was a nice pile of groceries in the back of Kathy’s van that she will deliver to the Salvation Army tomorrow.

I would like to thank all of you for the great cooperation in this year of transition. The first half of our year is over and we’ve had some excellent classes and participation. Now that we are moving to the Senior’s Center, I hope that we can continue to have the same spirit and continued fun for the rest of our 25th year celebrations.

May you enjoy the best of the season,relax, stay in your jammies all day if you wish, go for a walk, take your best friend for a coffee, and I hope your family finally listened to your hints for christmas morning and you get all the quilty gifts that you were hoping for.

I will be back in Feb with updates about guild activities. In the meantime, enjoy the mystery week-end and Sandra’s demo night. They are sure to give you two nice projects.

Christmas scraps

I was at the Tues Sit and Stitch session today, and almost everyone was busy with christmas themed projects or christmas gifties. What a hive of activity!! there were placemats, tablerunners,table centers,etc. etc.

Don’t forget to bring those pretty christmas themed quilts to the party next week. PLEASE SEE THE PREVIOUS POST FOR THE LIST OF ITEMS TO REMEMBER!!!

I already have my ugly-don’t-want-it-to-come-home-again fabric chosen for the game that georgie is planning. Believe me when I say that none of you will want to be stuck with it either- HONEST!

The stacks of boxes are already for moving day. Our handy carpenter is planning the cupboards this week. Since i will be away, I’m sure that Sandra will appreciate some help getting the boxes of books back on the shelves. We hope to have the library back in working order by mid Feb. and we are looking forward to ordering several new books.

I think I will try this new cranberry shortbread with white chocolate drizzle. If they turn out, I’ll share at the christmas party. See you then.

There is a second class for the Bargello table runner scheduled for tomorrow. It was a lovely display last night to see everyone’s fabric choices and success from the first class.

The next Sat workshop is the Mystery week-end in Jan. A great way to start off the new year with a Debbie Caffrey designed mystery. Our guild has done numerous designs by Debbie and they all have been a success. Because we are celebrating the move to our new digs at the Senior’s Center, there will be no charge for the workshop. You will only need to purchase the pattern. The first installment on the mystery was handed out at last night’s business meeting, which I assumed had the fabric requirements and pre-lim cutting instructions. There may still be patterns left, so call Kathy O if you have a question.

Our last activity in our old location will be the Christmas Party.

The doors open at 5:00pm on Thurs Dec 15.Lots of helpers to set up the tables are welcome.

We will eat and make merry at 6:00. Please bring:

1. a plate of appies or dessert to share

2.any doorprize that you would like to contribute.

3. there will be a gift exchange, so bring a wrapped gift at no more than $10 in value

4. There will be a little game devised by our elves and you are asked to bring a yard of fabric that you want to pass on to someone else. This can be ugly, pretty but not your style, or you’re just plain tired of it . Some people’s discards can be coveted by others, so there is hope that you will not go home with the same fabric that you brought.

5. We will also be gathering donations in food or $$$ to pass on to the food bank as their cupboards are often bare in January.

6. We try to cover our walls with christmas quilts,table runners or tree skirts for this annual party.Please share the christmas spirit and share your fabric decor.

At next Tues’s sewing session, we will be doing a final cleanup of the upstairs cupboard, and the 2 rooms downstairs. A detailed list of contents for the storage locker will be made. The Library books and supplies will be packed and ready for our move in January. We may have a grab box of small items at the Christmas party to be disposed of and it would all like a new home. Thanks to members for taking the bulletin boards and projector last night. We will be leaner and trimmer with this housekeeping behind us soon.

weather woes

Well at least once a winter, we have to cancel and change a class or activity. Usually that is in Dec or Jan – but the weather was a little iffy tonight. Of course the snow stopped right after we started calling folks but now at 7:30 the black ice is making the roads very slippy and my thermometer looks like it will go even lower.

We hope you all can come next thurs night at the same time and there are balmy winds blowing from the direction of hawaii. Thanks for understanding.

Scrapology 101

Come join us for a fun evening of scrap management. We will have a short talk and introduction into controling scraps, then let you break for coffee and treats before we get back to work.

Some of you may wish to browse through the books, and take notes on the samples that are on display, but some of us are going to tackle some scrap bins that have been gifted to the guild. We will set up our ironing stations. Anyone who wishes to assist can come with a sharp rotary blade, a cutting mat and any assortment of rulers to cut strips, squares and bricks. We’re getting ready for our next community quilt bee.

The smoke has cleared – Full steam ahead !!

Now that we have money matters out of the way, it looks like we are looking forward to our move to the Seniors Center. There will be growing pains with the move – but hopefully we can all adapt. We are female afterall and we all have practiced, adapted and juggled lots of balls in the air at once.

Our “carpenter” says that he can put together the new cabinet and adapt our old shelves for the library. That’s excellent news and we look forward to getting unpacked.

There were some ideas tossed around about the recipe book publication. But FIRST!! we must gather some more recipes. If you forgot to submit 1-2, please feel free. THEN, we must proofread, type, proofread and edit. Volunteers are very welcome for that part . Then we can research costs for publication.

Hope everyone has their stratas sewn for Kathy’s bargello table runner – it is stunning and elegant.

Generosity!!

There were lots of helpful guild members with heads down – hard at work today at the guild. We got several quilts cataloged, bindings finished, sandwiched and sized for battings.

There were 2 teams putting together Mile-a-Minute blocks with some nice sashing, as well as G. getting lessons from S. in construction of these style of blocks.

KathyO brought a whole drawer of blue and green scraps, saying that they must NOT go home with her! So Gwen found some greens for a 4 patch project and Sandra found lots of forest tones to work on another class sample for the Jan demo. Shirley and I went to town on the rest of the drawer finding all the strings for Kathy to start some of her own string blocks. The rest will be cut up at the Nov demo night by volunteers.

Just as a promo for the Nov. Demo night. ……… Shirley and I will give a brief talk on Scrap organization, and there will be lots of samples and books for you to browse through. BUT if you’d like to participate, you can bring your rotary cutter, cutting mat, rulers and squares to help up cut up the scraps so generously donated by Kathy and Becky and others.

comfort quilt workbee SUNDAY!!

The boxes of assorted fabrics are ready to be brought upstairs. The batting has arrived and will be picked up from Deb. Our sewing machines are oiled and our needles are sharp . We’re ready to CREATE!

I have 4 quilts to sandwich, and there are 2 more of the quilt show ninepatches to sandwich. There is one ninepatch ready to hand sew the binding.

There’s some flannel backings that need some tops made to fit.

Gai D has brought a shoe box full of Mile-a-Minute blocks that can be sewn with sashings and a border. There’s another box full of half completed M-a-M blocks that someone could finish.

I have several shoe boxes full of strings and will have foundations ready for string blocks.

So as you can see there’s lots to do if you don’t already have some project in mind. See you on Sunday. We will try to have the hall open at 9:00.

Used Book Sale!! a success

The library committee hopes that you found some useful books or patterns at last night’s sale. There was quite a lot left over and these items will be boxed up and be available for browseing at the next business mtg. and the Nov. demo night.

The unsold used books will be donated to the PR Public Library for fund raising or to the Brooks school textile dept. Please inform us if you know of another worthy group.

The sale of the books brought in $97.25 which will go towards the purchase of new books or DVD’s . If you have something to recommend – please don’t be shy.

The recommended showcased books at last night’s demo will be displayed on the table downstairs for a few months. Look for the list posted on the wall and please enjoy these references.

Each month , the librarians will try to showcase some topical books pertaining to the activity or workshop to be held. I will also try to share some of my personal favs from my own collection. In this way, we can perhaps see what is of most interest to people.

Hope you get to relax – enjoy the fall weather- go for a walk while the turkey is cooking………but if it’s raining…….. then snuggle in your fav chair with a pile of cook books or old family favorites and pick some recipes for our guild cookbook.

I have some old favorites. One is called Banana Slush and is a great summer drink that my Mom made for many summers on the prairies. It was found in an old Mormon cookbook given to her from a friend.

The other recipe is always refered to as Christmas Cake cookies and it is written in my Mom’s handwriting in an old journal that is literally held together with a rubber band. Now that Mom has passed away, Dad and I have made a batch and he has shared with all his friends and the nurses and caregivers at ECU. For those of you who hate fruit cake and dread being given a brick of this sort of baking , then you may like these cookies. They have almonds, brazil nuts,pecans,dried fruit such as raisins,dates,cherries,pineapple, and they are all held together by the thinnest of batters-dropped on a cookie sheet- and baked just until they will hold together. Gooey and chewy- bet you can’t stop at just one!!
