October Reminder

September 28, 2008

Our October Business mtg -Thurs Oct 4th,2008

1. We have several new members – so please wear your nametag- any nametag – just so they can get to know your names. It would be nicer if it was home made – but I think it’s more important to be big clear letters so they don’t have to put on glasses to read your name on your chest!

2. Program committee will be putting out the sign-up sheet for the Texada Retreat. To avoid hurt feelings – they have waited until this week so that everyone has a fair chance to sign up without a waiting list.

We will make sure that every single member is contacted and informed of this – so no one is missed.

Please be prepared to pay to reserve your spot .

3. If you are choosing to participate in the voluntary brown bag challenge- remember your small brown bag containing 4 fat quarters and a piece of paper inside with your name. This package will be the starting point for a project that you will make and “gift back” to the originator of the packet of fat 1/4’s.

Yes, you can add other fabrics,……No ,you don’t have to use all the fabric in the bag,…..No it does not have to be a quilted wall hanging . It can be any sewn item that you think the person will enjoy.

Becky says that the Secret Santa gift exchange at the Rose Garden quilt shop was an awful lot of fun- and an enormous success. This too could be fun , if we get lots of interest.

UNveiling will be the EndOfYear Party in June 2009.

4. There is a waiting list for all the Machine Quilting DVD’s by Patsy Thompson. Please return these ASAP.

Hands Across The Water 2008 – Update

September 16, 2008

What’s this all about?

This event is being hosted by the Sunshine Coast Quilter’s Guild on Sat Oct 25, 2008.

Location is the Holy Family Parish Hall 5700 Nickerson Road in West Sechelt. That’s right it’s BEFORE you get to the main town of Sechelt and there will be signs on the road. This is the same hall where the quilt show was last year.

This is a social day hosted by a different guild every year. Quilters from Campbell River, Quadra Island, Comox Valley , Texada Island and Powell River all gather to enjoy lunch, a guest speaker, shopping, fun and chatter.

This event is very popular and unfortunately , if you don’t already have your name on the list , there might not be enough space to accomodate everyone. The deadline was June 30th.

Here’s a list of reminders for those attending. Remember the Theme is Harvest and Fall – plan accordingly:)

1.pick up your block instructions, and note that the light fabric must be ecru, beige or light tan.

2.Hat contest- decorate and wear a fall harvest hat- there’s secret judges and PRIZES!

3.Challenge – in a fall theme. Project must have been made in the last year, any harvest theme, harvest colours, and viewer’s choice will perhaps win you a prize.

4.Fat Quarter exchange – again in Fall colors or prints.

5.$$$ for the merchant mall. There will be a number of quilt shops with goodies for purchase. Cash and Cheques work well.

Lunch is provide and our featured speaker is Judy Farrow from Parksville,Vancouver Island.

Show and Tell is encouraged – so plan to bring along a project and story to share.

PLEASE sign up for the CARPOOL -see the list on the program table at the meeting on Thurs.

HAW starts at 10AM and ends at 3:30pm

That means that we MUST catch the 7:25am ferry at Saltery Bay and catch the 4:25pm ferry at Earl’s Cove to get home. Plan accordingly to catch your ride. Have your BC ferries card for a discount fee.

UPDATE:

Now that I have figured out how to upload other things besides photos, I am including the HAW 2008 Information package. In case you have misplaced your copy of the Block pattern, or for more information not included in this blog entry.  The “t-shirt” order form is also included in the document, but I think the deadline may have come and gone for ordering.  If in doubt contact Kathy O. -Alice

Timberlane Quilters’ Guild Presents: “Falling to Pieces”

September 15, 2008

Timberlane Quilters’ Guild is starting off the year with a presentation of Quilts at Vancouver Island University – Powell River Campus. The theme is Fall. What a great way to transition from summer into fall. Quilters are known for taking fabric, cutting it up, and sewing it, or “piecing” it back together.

It is an opportunity to showcase what the Guild does, and an opportunity for anyone to come and meet members of the group. For more information open the Timberlane Quilters’ Guild Falling to Pieces poster. (will open in this window, click on your BACK button on your browser to return to this page)

for all you hand stitchers

September 4, 2008

I came across this lovely website that is an online quarterly magazine FULL of excellent articles and tutorials about stitchery and crazy quilting. I’m sure that you will put it on your favorites list , but it is also posted on our sidebar for instant recall.

The recent July issue has 23 articles with excellent instructions and photos. There are book and product reviews. Even though I am not a crazy quilter, I found a method to use rickrack trim in a funky way on my garden theme quilt , so I hope you search for it at the quilt show.

There is an area to read back issues as well – so make yourself a cuppa tea and enjoy.

Schedule of Events 2008-2009

September 3, 2008

The Program Committee has put together a varied program this year.

Many events will be geared for the quilt show, with the last Thursday of every month set aside for those who would like assistance or require extra space to finish off quilts. A great opportunity to meet other guild members and have a visit and a chat.

There is also a Special Interest Group (SIG) for Fibre Arts that will be starting this fall. If you are interested in joining this group, they will meet the second Thursday of each month. Members of the guild are encouraged to start other SIGs. You are welcome to use the second and/or fourth Thursday evenings. If Thursday evenings are not suitable to your schedule, there is a group that also meets on Tuesdays from 10:00 to about 2:00. Find a number of like minded quilters and get together.
